For starters, Rays vs. Jays, with Pena leading off
UPDATE, 6:05: Maddon said it will "probably" be a short term stint for Pena at the top of the lineup, with this explanation: "Watching how these games are progressing and how everybody's not pitching to him, I'd rather him go up there and just take his walks and get on base if that's what the other teams want to do, and in the meantime if throw a fastball in the right spot I have a pretty good feeling he's going to hit that well, too. Just trying to give him a different outlook on the day, really just think about himself differently - accept your walks, hit singles up the middle, do something to score runs, to get on base, etc. ... But primarily think of yourself as a table setter for a bit.''
UPDATE, 5:15: Pena said he first thought the lineup posted outside the clubhouse "was a joke,'' the after asking clubhouse security man Tom Berte if it was real smiled and decided it was a good thing: "I think it's cool.'' ... Maddon said he wanted Pena to remian patient and take his walks, so this way it could work to the Rays advantage. Plus he is hoping there is an additional benefit of Ben Zobrist becoming more aggressive in the No. 4 spot. ... Maddon also said he liked the matchup to get Sutton involved today. ... OF Desmond Jennings had a good day and is close, but not quite ready, to go out on a short rehab stint, so it's not clear if he will be ready on Sunday, when eligible to return from the DL.
UPDATE, 3:33: Manager Joe Maddon is resorting to one of his common tactics today to try to shake Carlos Pena out of his slump by moving him to the leadoff spot.
BREAKING: The Rays try to reverse their latest skid tonight against Toronto with rookie LHP Matt Moore on the mound.
The Rays have lost their their last two and four of the six games on this homestand, as their lengthy list of injuries appear to be catching up with them.
Moore can stop that with a strong start tonight. He and the Rays felt he took a big step in that direction in his last outing against Boston on Thursday, as he retired the last 10 batters he faced.
No roster moves today, that we know of, for the battered Rays.
Lineups when available.
