For starters, Rays vs Orioles
Update 9:04 p.m Orioles RHP Chris Tillman held the Rays without a hit through six innings, but was pulled after that because he threw 101 pitches.
CF B.J. Upton broke up the no-hitter with a single up the middle with two outs in the seventh.
Update 4:50 p.m. Manager Joe Maddon said C Kelly Shoppach is starting tonight against RHP Chris Tillman because Tillman is more of a neutral pitcher, with similar success vs. lefties/righties.
Shoppach will also start Sunday against LH Zach Britton. Maddon said Elliot Johnson will start at shortstop Sunday, with Sean Rodriguez at second base.
Developing: The Rays, coming off a disappointing 4-1 loss to the Orioles in their season opener, return to Tropicana Field tonight to face Baltimore.
RHP James Shields, who said this is probably the most excited he's ever been to start a season, will give his much-improved mechanics a test drive tonight against a very formidable Orioles lineup.
The Rays lineup is pretty much the same, other than C Kelly Shoppach will make his season debut behind the plate. Though Shoppach usually starts against lefties, manager Joe Maddon could be looking at his numbers (2-for-3 with a homer against Orioles RHP Chris Tillman), or they might be taking it easy with C John Jaso, who was sidelined near the end of spring after getting a foul tip to the groin area.
Shoppach could get another start Sunday, as the Orioles called up their top pitching prospect, LHP Zach Britton, to take the place of injured LHP Brian Matusz.
