For starters, Rays vs. Rangers, with Longoria leading off
These are the special Memorial Day caps the Rays are wearing.
UPDATE, 5:10: RHP Jeff Niemann's simulated game went very well, with no hesitation or issues with his previously strained back. Manager Joe Maddon said Niemann looked to be in mid-season form. Niemann said he ready for the next step, which likely will be a three-start rehab assignment. ... Maddon chose Longoria for the top of the lineup again because he didn't like how it looked otherwise he said, and liked the idea of Rodriguez and Upton 3-4. Also, it was a tough call between Matt Joyce and Sam Fuld for leftfield against Texas lefty Derek Holland so Maddon went with the power. ... 1B Casey Kotchman's ankle was better and Maddon said the Rays were optimistic he woudn't have to go on the DL but it sounds like he will be out of the lineup for a few days at least, though could pinch-hit or play defense. ... The Rays are waiting until after the game to make it official that RHP Alex Cobb will be recalled to start on Tuesday, with RHP Brandon Gomes seemingly the likely candidate to be optioned back to Durham.
UPDATE, 3:22: Longoria stays at the top of Rays lineup, and Joyce gets a start vs. a lefty, but hitting seventh.
DEVELOPING: The Rays are getting ready to put the cap on the holiday weekend with tonight's game against the Rangers, and they will be wearing special Memorial Day caps.
RHP Wade Davis will be on the mound for the Rays, and LHP Derek Holland for the Rangers in the first meeting of the teams since last season's Division Series.
Felipe Lopez was expected to start at first for the Rays today anyway, but starter Casey Kotchman left Sunday's game with a sprained ankle so there should be an update on his condition.
Also, RHP Jeff Niemann is scheduled to throw a simulated game today, the last hurdle before he goes on a rehab assignment since being sidelined by a lower back strain.
