For starters, Rays vs. Red Sox
UPDATE, 12:51: RHP Kyle Farnsworth is receiving pretty much all-day treatment on his tender right elbow and said it will be at least a couple days until he starts to play catch to know how it feels. Until then Maddon said the Rays will operate based on matchups in the late innings, though in a perfect setup he would use RHP Joel Peralta in the ninth inning. LHP J.P. Howell sounds like the other leading candidate to get the final three outs. .... Maddon also said it was possible the Rays could add pitchers to the bullpen, raising the possibility LHPs such as Alex Torres and/or top prospect Matt Moore could be called up and used out of the bullpen. ... Maddon kept lefty swinging DH Johnny Damon in the lineup vs. Boston LHP Jon Lester based on his past performance (8-for-27 with 2 HRs) as well as his experience, but he went with righty hitting Brandon Guyer in right. ... INF/OF Russ Canzler will wear No. 45 and is obviously excited about being in the big leagues for the first time, having earned a promotion from Triple-A Durham. He will be even more excited when a number of family members make the 2 1/2 drive from his hometown of Hazleton, Pa., (same as Maddon) to Baltimore. Canzler will take ground balls at first base but seems more likely to be used primarily as a pinch-hitter. RHP Dane De La Rosa is also here and will be part of the bullpen mix.
UPDATE, 12:42: To make room on 40-man roster, Rays designated for assignment RHP Mike Ekstrom.
DEVELOPING: After two big wins, the Rays today go for a sweep of the Red Sox to keep alive their late run at a postseason spot, with a chance to move within 3 1/2 games of the wild-card spot.
The Rays will have their best pitcher, James Shields, on the mound. But the Sox will, too, in lefty Jon Lester.
As a result, the Rays lineup has a little different look, with rookie Brandon Guyer in right and Jose Lobaton behind the plate.
The Boston lineup looks like this:
The Rays have two new faces, with INF/OF Russ Canzler and RHP Dane De La Rosa added to the roster.
