UPDATE, 11:52: Manager Joe Maddon said Manny Ramirez is expected back for Friday's game after needing today to deal with "a family matter.'' Ramirez also missed the March 30 exhibition finale, and Maddon said he thinks the matter should be resolved after today but wasn't sure that Ramirez wouldn't need to miss any other games. ... With Kelly Shoppach started at catcher (because Maddon liked him vs. Sox started Edwin Jackson), Maddon is trying Sam Fuld in the leadoff spot. ... The Rays are breaking out all kinds of cold weather gear today, including ski caps, gloves, Nike cold gear (thermal underwear), sweatshirts and Maddon's favorite, the "Elmer Fudd" style hat with ear flaps. And look for CF B.J. Upton, at least, to be wearing a ski mask. "Absolutely,'' he said.
