Tampa Bay Rays C Michel Hernandez designated for assignment
To make room on the 25-man roster for new C Gregg Zaun, the Rays designated for assignment backup Michel Hernandez.
Manager Joe Maddon spoke of the good job Hernandez did and said he hoped if Hernandez wasn't grabbed by another team that he would stay in the organization and go to Triple-A Durham.
“He’s a class act,” Maddon said. “I have a lot of respect for that young man. He’s done a great job for us. Hopefully, he passes through all the process and remains with us – we really, truly hope that. He’s a great teammate, he’s great in the clubhouse, he’s done a wonderful job on the field. This is one of those unfortunate situations when you have to do something to a player that you really have a lot of respect for, which I do. So hopefully this all works out in our favor, and if it doesn't and he has to go play in the major leagues with another team, I'm happy for him also.''
Hernandez said he was "surprised" and "very sad" when the Rays acquired Zaun but wasn't disappointed about being designated because he felt he had played well. He also said if he wasn’t claimed he’d probably accept an assignment to Triple-A Durham because he feels comfortable in the organization and it’s convenient since he lives in Tampa.
