Tampa Bay Rays seem unlikely to make a big deal

With LHP Cliff Lee traded to Philadelphia, the Rays will continue exploring other options – likely from Toronto ace Roy Halladay and Indians C Victor Martinez down to another arm for their bullpen – but at this point seem unlikely to make any kind of major deal before Friday’s 4 p.m. deadline for nonwaiver trades.
“I know (executive VP Andrew Friedman) is still hunkered down trying to get some things done,’’ manager Joe Maddon said before Wednesday’s game. “But let me put it this way – I wouldn’t be surprised if nothing happened.’’
Maddon called Lee ”a very interesting pitcher” and said: "It’s obviously good for the Phillies and he’s in the other league, so that makes it better. … If we can”t have him, send him to the other league.’’
He said Martinez, 30,  has improved behind the plate and called him “a pretty complete offensive player.’’
