Tender times: Of Cust, Diaz, Jenks, Sherrill, Ray

Of the 48 players non-tendered by other teams, there are some names certain to be of interest to the Rays this morning - if not last night as they were already studying the list of new free agents leading up to the midnight deadline.

As far as the outfield/DH bat they are looking to add, the two names that stand out are Jack Cust (A's), who boasts a career .378 on-base percentage, and Matt Diaz (Braves), who has shown the ability to hit for power and average.

As for relievers with experience at the end of games, these are three worth noting: Bobby Jenks (White Sox), Tampa product Chris Ray (Giants) and George Sherrill (Dodgers).

While all 48 - in addition to the four the Rays set free, Willy Aybar, Lance Cormier, J.P. Howell and Dioner Navarro - are available, some have deals to re-sign, some aren't healthy, some are going to seek too much money (which is why they were non-tendered in the first place). But some others may want to sign quickly, fearing getting lost in what Rays exec VP Andrew Friedman acknowledged is a crowded market and remaining unsigned for months.

A couple of other names of note are C Russell Martin, a former All-Star with the Dodgers, and OF Lastings Milledge, the athletic bay area/Bradenton product who most recently was with Pittsburgh.

There's a good rundown over at, and here are a few of their comments.

On Cust: "Cust doesn't impress defensively, but not too many free agents can match a .395 OBP."

On Jenks: "There are plenty of good right-handed relievers available, but if you take Mariano Rivera and Rafael Soriano off the board, Jenks might be the best closer.  Jenks throws hard and posted huge strikeout and groundball rates this year, so he should find multiple years and at least $5MM per."
