This time, umps don't have much to say

The umpires didn't have much to say after Wednesday's game in explaining the rare and - going by TV replays - wrong call that Sean Rodriguez missed third base in the sixth inning.

Here's what third-base umpire Angel Hernandez had for a pool reporter:  "I have no commment. The guy missed the bag.''

Asked about having controversial calls two nights in a row, he said: "You want to make it interesting. It has nothing to do with that."

And this from crew chief Joe West on the call: "We don't see it a lot either but he missed the bag. We've got to call him out. ...  The statement is he missed the bag and you've got to call him out if they appeal.''

Told that Rays third-base coach Tom Foley said there were no footprints near the base so that showed Rodriguez touched it, West said:
"That's all they can do. They're looking for help and there is no help. He just missed the bag. It's an important play, it's the tying run but he missed the bag, so what do you do?"
