Toll of Luke's record-setting struggles: Tears, sleepless nights, heavy heart

UPDATE, 9:22: Scott is out of the game after making another out, extending his streak to 0-for-39. The major-league record is 0-for-46, per Elias, set last year by Eugenio Velez.

UPDATE, 8:19: Scott just broke the team record with his second out of the night, now 0-for-38. Jose Cruz Jr. was 0-for-37 during the 2004 season.

BREAKING: Luke Scott said the toll of his extended struggles - 0-for-36 going into tonight's game, a .197 average overall - has worn heavily on him personally - leading him to sleepless nightd and tears. He feels he is fine physically, and the core of his struggles is finding the "elusive" feel to be a successful hitter.

"I have sleepless nights, lots of sleepless nights,'' Scott said. "It's brought me to tears, it really has. It's something that really weighs heavily on my heart every single day. Every single day I wake up, I have this burden on my heart and I have this heaviness. I get on my knees every single day and I pray, I ask the good Lord to help me, to help me come through this. That's where my trust is. I have peace knowing I've done everything I can humanly possibly do to be in a position to be successful. There's no doubt about that, I've done everything and I'll continue to do that. That's the only thing I can do. Does it weigh heavy on my heart? Oh my gosh. I'd say if I wan't a Christian man, I'd be an alcoholic or something - this is something that would have driven me to drink.''
