Top pick Guerrieri clarifies incident: One beer before attending HS football game

Rays top draft pick RHP Taylor Guerrieri clarified the "incident" that led to him switching high schools during his senior year, saying it resulted from drinking one beer before attending a high school football game and that it was "a mistake" he has learned from and regrets.

In Guerrieri's words from a conference call this evening:

"It was an alcohol-related incident. It was a mistake. I learned from it. I regret that it happened. It won't happen again. From that whole thing, I  don't have a police record from it. And we've moved on. ...

"I had one beer in the afternoon prior to a football game. I wasn't drunk or misbehaving. The police resource officer came up to me and she asked me if I had any alcohol and I admitted it and said yes I had a beer whenever she asked. At that point my dad took me out of the stadium and we just decided that to switch schools might be best for me. And that was pretty much what the whole stink was about this year I guess with everybody.

"So I thought I would let you guys know what really happened and get that off my back kind of.

"It was something that a lot of people have done before and I just got in trouble.''

Guerrieri said there was no school suspension and "no punishment" but they decided to switch schools from North Augusta (S.C.) to Spring Valley, in Columbia. Also, he said he was not driving that night, that he was a passenger in a friend's car.
