Two infielders among spring roster additions
The Rays have added two infielders with big-league experience to their spring training roster, signing Angel Chavez and J.J. Furmaniak to minor-league deals with invitations to big-league camp. They also formally invited four players from the organization - SS Tim Beckham, RHP Heath Rollins and Cs Craig Albernaz and Nevin Ashley.
With the additions, the Rays roster stands at 56 with the first workout for pitchers and catchers next Friday in Port Charlotte, and the full squad on Feb. 24.
Chavez, 28, spent last season playing third base for Boston's Triple-A Pawtucket team, hitting .253 with four homers and 39 RBIs. He has 10 games experience in the big leagues with the Giants in 2005. Furmaniak, 30, spent last season with the Phillies Triple-A Lehigh Valley team, hitting .230 with five homers and 48 RBIs. He played parts of the 2005 and 2007 seasons in the majors with the Pirates and A's and is primarily a shortstop, but has also played second, third and the outfield.
Rollins, 24, is making his first appearance in big-league camp. Beckham, Albernaz and Ashley were all there last year.
