Upton could rejoin Rays in Toronto
CF B.J. Upton has done well enough on his rehab assignment that manager Joe Maddon said was "not out of the question" that Upton could rejoin the Rays during the three-game series here in Toronto.
Upton was to play nine innings for Double-A Montgomery on Tuesday, and there could be a decision then though Maddon said Friday is "probably" the more likely date.
The Rays are concerned with the Upton's physical conditioning, such as being able to run and play on turf, as much as his baseball skills. And Maddon acknowledged that they expect him to struggle a bit offensively when he does first return since he hasn't seen major-league pitching in more than a month.
Upton has been out since the March 14 outfield collision with Desmond Jennings.
