Upton to DL; Gomes, Gimenez to minors; Brignac back on field

CF B.J. Upton said he will be placed on the DL to start the season, as he has yet to fully recover from the March 14 outfield collision.

The Rays appeared to set their bullpen and catching corps, in optioning Brandon Gomes to Triple-A and re-assigning Chris Gimenez to minor-league camp. That means Burke Badenhop gets the final bullpen spot and Jose Lobaton the second catcher's job.

Also, SS Reid Brignac said he will be back on the field on Thursday and plans to play with the partial tear of the plantar fascia in his right foot.

The Rays also told RHPs Ryan Reid and Marquis Fleming they would be re-assigned, though they will stick around a few days.

Upton said "there's no timetable, there's no finish line to when it's going to get better," as the plan is to make sure he is healthy before he returns.  "When I'm ready to go, I'm ready to go,'' he said.

"Would I love to be there? Yeah. But if this is going to help me over the long term this is what we've got to do.''
