Upton: "If it happens, it happens"
There's still a week until the deadline for non-waiver deals but Rays CF B.J. Upton is already getting tired of the growing trade rumors.
Upton reiterated Sunday that he wants to stay with the Rays. But after a weekend in which he was pulled from Friday's game in the 8th inning, top outfield prospect Desmond Jennings was promoted and Upton not in the Sunday lineup, he sounded like he just wants resolution. Also, he added the Phillies to the list of teams supposedly interested.
"I just got the day off today. I think that's what it is. I hope that's what it is,'' Upton said. "It's become a comedy to me. So whatever. There's something new everyday - San Fran, Cleveland, Washington, Philly. I mean, what is it? I don't know. I'm to the point where I don't even care. If it happens, it happens. I don't know. I'm to the point where I just really don't give a (darn).''
Upton said his preference is to stay with the Rays: "I don't want to go nowhere.''
Asked where he'd like to go among the teams said to be interested, he replied: "If I had to go? I don't know. Still nowhere. I don't really want to go anywhere.''
Upton was good-natured in his comments, joking that if dealt he would take 3B Evan Longoria, RHP James Shields and LHP J.P. Howell with him.
"At this point, I have no idea,'' Upton said. "Evan said it, "Everything's going to be all right.' ''
