Upton loses new young friend

Dominick Beach, a 16-year-old patient at All Children’s Hospital thrilled to be visited by B.J. Upton before the April 21 game, died Tuesday.

Beach had asked to meet Upton, and the Childrens Dream Fund and the Rays arranged the visit.

As thrilled as Beach was at the visit, Upton also was touched and inspired. Beach asked him to hit a home run, and though Upton couldn't quite comply, he did deliver a bases-loaded single that sent the Rays to a 4-1 win and said afterward he dedicated to his new friend.

Upton was saddened by Tuesday’s news. “It kind of puts things in perspective,’’ he said after the game in Toronto. “A kid that age, he hadn’t really even gotten the chance to live. It’s sad to hear. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. It wasn't what I expected to hear today. I’m just glad I got the chance to make him happy.’’
