Wade Davis ready for relief role
Rays manager Joe Maddon said the thought of putting RHP Wade Davis in the bullpen has always intrigued him.
And now Davis will get his chance during the ALDS, with Maddon liking the fact he can use a hard-throwing Davis more than once against a predomnantly right-handed lineup. In shorter stints, Maddon believes Davis' velocity can rise up to around 95-97.
Davis said he expected the move coming, and understood.
"I'm happy with it," Davis said. "I knew there was a chance that (LHP Matt) Moore could pitch, and I'm happy with that."
Davis said he's only pitched in relief a couple times, mostly in spring training. "I'll take the same approach, go out and try to get guys out."
As far as maintaining a higher velocity, Davis said, "I think I'll be able to go a little bit harder but at the same time be under control, and things should be good."
Maddon thinks Davis could go on back-to-back days potentially.
"At this point in the season, I'm in shape, arm is in shape and everything is ready to go," Davis said.
