Wrist sprain ends Aybar's winter ball season
The Rays had reserve infielder Willy Aybar stop playing winter ball due to a minor right wrist sprain.
Aybar had been playing for Licey in his native Dominican Republic but has been sidelined for about a week. The Rays decided it best that Aybar stop playing in hopes of keeping what they consider a minor problem from becoming worse.
Tigres GM Fernando Ravelo told Licey.com that Aybar may have to travel to St. Petersburg so the Rays doctors can examine his wrist, but to this point the Rays have not deemed it necessary.
Aybar hit .273 in six games during the round-robin playoffs for Licey, after hitting .259 with 1 homer and 9 RBIs over 27 regular-season games.
Aybar, a switch-hitter, will make $1.35-million in 2010 and expected to fill in at first, third and DH.
