Yankees hitting coach: Rays 'not above the game'

The New York Times today was the latest to join the discussion about the Rays' increased use of defensive shifts, a topic familiar to our readers here and here.

The Times did a long piece with much of the usual background and theory, but the most interesting part dealt with how the Rays frustrated the Yanlkees during the opening weekend series, holding them to 21 hits for the three days, including 13 singles.

The Rays alignments are based on serious data and research, but Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long sounded pretty sure they just got lucky and that the percentages would catch up to them soon enough.

"They’re not above the game by any means,” he said. “They hit the jackpot against us in the first series. ... They were in the perfect spot. Come on, man, that’s not going to happen all year.”
