Zimmer to be limited in spring

Rays senior adviser Don Zimmer will be somewhat limited during spring training.

Zimmer, who turns 82 Thursday, said he is feeling good but likely will make only a couple appearances a week rather than attend camp regularly as in years past. That's because of the hassles of moving his home dialysis equipment to an apartment in Port Charlotte; instead he plans to make day trips from his Seminole condo a couple times a week.

Zimmer said he has to be careful walking due to some issues with his legs, and has some discomfort from the tubes related to the treatment, which may prevent him from wearing a uniform.

But otherwise, he is ready for what will be his 65th season in the game.

"As ready as I can get,'' he said. ""Everything's all right. I can't complain. Nobody wants to hear it anyhow.''

Zimmer - who had dinner in Sarasota Tuesday with Tigers manager and close friend Jim Leyland and on Wednesday attended Derek Jeter's charity event at the Seminole Hard Rock on Tampa - plans to attend as many home games at the Trop as he can.
