Cust signed to minor-league deal
UPDATE, 11:17: Cust said he had been talking to the Rays for a while and they agreed to terms on Friday.
"Everybody feels good going into spring training, everybody feels like this is the year,'' Cust said. "I really feel like I'm in a good spot and a good situation physically and mentally. I feel good. I've got nothing to lose. I play the game a long time and this is a place I've always admired from afar and the opportunity came and I'm really excited.''
Cust spent last season at Triple-A with the Yankees and Blue Jays, hitting .243 with 20 homers and 72 RBIs in 114 games.
He has a career .242 big-league average with - more impressively - a .374 on-base percentage.
DEVELOPING: The Rays added another left-handed bat to their spring roster, signing Jack Cust to a minor-legaue deal. Cust, 34, played part of 10 seasons in the majors, last with Oakland in 2011. He is a DH/OF type and hit 33 homers in 2008 with Oakland.
