Escobar goes on DL; Beliveau recalled
UPDATE, 3:45: To take the open roster spot, the Rays opted to bolster their bullpen and called up LHP Jeff Beliveau, who had two earlier stints.
DEVELOPING: The Rays decided to put SS Yunel Escobar on the DL and will announce a replacement Tuesday.
Escobar, who hasn't played since leaving last Tuesday's game, went through a pre-game workout Monday and the team decided he wasn't throwing well enough.
"Nothing horrid,'' Maddon said. "He threw today, his biggest concern is just to let it go. He's like a little bit concerned with that. I said listen, let's not play that game. Let's give you a couple days off because it's a long season, we need you to be well. One of his major strengths is his arm strength, and his ability to throw well. So why would you want to lost that tool by trying to rush back right now.''
Escobar will eligible to return July 10.
Infielder candidates to be called up include Vince Belnome, who is on the 40-man roster, and veterans Jayson Nix, Miek Fontenot and Wilson Betemit, none of whom are on the 40-man.
