Fernando Rodney and the Magic Plantain
Rays closer Fernando Rodney has been pitching well and having a blast at the World Baseball Classic.
And he took that to a new level for Monday night's Dominican Republic semifinal win over the Netherlands, breaking out what he called the Magic Plantain, which he said he had flown in from his native land.
He had it "holstered" in his uniform pants, waved during introductions and carried it around in the dugout during the game, which he saved, his sixth of the tournament.
Here in Port Charlotte this morning, his Rays teammates were having a good laugh.
"I never saw that one before,'' good buddy Joel Peralta said.
Yahoo! Sports Jeff Passan has a pretty good take on Rodney and the special fruit.
