Rays-Royals game called off due to snow
UPDATE, 5:39: And the game, which has been delayed since 2:18, is now called off. It will be replayed from the start at a date TBA.
UPDATE, 5:21: Snow is now falling at Kauffman Stadium. A decision, or at least at update, from the umps on resuming is expected at 5:30.
UPDATE, 3:29: Technically umps have to wait 30 mins to call off this mess. And if/when they do, it never happened, game would be replayed from start. (For it to be an official game would have to complete 4 1/2 innings with home team leading or 5 with visiting team leading; if game were tied after it became official and then called off would be resumed from that point.)
UPDATE, 3:21: The game is now in a delay, as the umps stopped play before the Royals batted in the bottom of the fourth. Royals lead 1-0, but it's not official.
UPDATE, 1:36: The tarp is off and they will start the game here today. With temperatures expected to be in the high 30s and a "feels-like" in the high 20s, Maddon is contemplating wearing a ski mask in the dugout today UNDER his "Elmer Fudd" cap with the ear flaps: "I'm a baby when it comes to cold weather."
DEVELOPING: As of now, it looks like the Rays and Royals are going to be playing today.
Or at least will start playing.
Manager Joe Maddon said they were told to expect to get in about five innings, with the heavy rain starting around 3 p.m local time and then sticking around and turning to snow.
As a result, the emphasis will be on getting an early lead and hanging on to it, and Maddon said he could use the bullpen differntly than normal as a result, perhaps calling for Joel Peralta and Fernando Rodney first.
