For starters: Miller 'extremely disappointed' about move to 1B; KK elevated to No. 2 in order
Brad Miller was told Monday that he will not be the shortstop once Matt Duffy joins the lineup.
“Extremely disappointed,” Miller said this afternoon when asked about the move. “Obviously I’m a shortstop. I’ve been working hard and doing everything and playing well there. (Monday) was a punch in the gut them telling me he’s our shortstop now.”
Duffy, acquired Monday from the Giants, is currently rehabbing an Achilles injury. He will be evaluated Wednesday when he arrives at the Trop and the Rays will formulate a rehab plan.
Miller said the Rays did not mince words when he was informed of the move.
“They said him playing shortstop was out best chance to win,” Miller said.
In the meantime, Miller will begin working with bench coach Tom Foley at first base.
“I have to go out and play and play well,” Miller said. “That’s the only thing I can do.”
1B Logan Morrison, currently rehabbing a right forearm strain, will also see time at first base when he returns, though manager Kevin Cash said will take some balancing for playing time. Cash said they want Miller’s bat in the lineup.
In other news, CF Kevin Kiermaier has been moved to No. 2 in the lineup. Cash said they want Kiermaier’s speed closer to the top in an effort to generate more offense. Miller and LF/DH Corey Dickerson will alternate at the cleanup spot.
Matt Andriese returns to the rotation tonight during this second game of the four-game set against the Royals
Andriese last started June 25 at Baltimore during the first game of a doubleheader. That was a spot start. Andriese had been moved to the bullpen after making seven starts as the fifth starter. The move was to create an opening for Blake Snell.
Andriese was 5-0 in seven starts before losing to Baltimore.
Here are the lineups:
Ventura RHP (6-9, 4.88)
Andriese RHP (6-2, 2.75)
