For starters: Matt Duffy shutdown, lineups vs O's
In a move that should surprise no one, SS Matt Duffy is being shutdown down for the remainder of the season because of soreness in his left Achilles.
Duffy is scheduled to be examined Friday by a doctor in North Carolina with the procedure to shave the bone in his heel to follow.
Duffy was scheduled to travel with the team after today's game to New York and play Thursday night against the Yankees before making the trip to Charlotte. But after being scratched from Monday's lineup because of the soreness, the team decided not to risk further damage to the area.
Nick Franklin is at shortstop today as the Rays try to avoid a three-game sweep to the playoff contending Orioles.
LHP Drew Smyly, 4-0 in his last seven starts, faces Orioles rookie RHP Dylan Bundy.
The Rays lost the first two games of the series 7-3 and 11-2. It was the first time since June 13-14, 2013 that a pair of Rays starters allowed at least seven runs. Jeremy Hellickson and Matt Moore did it in 2013. Matt Andriese and Jake Odorizzi did it this week.
The Rays wrap up the six-game homestand this afternoon. They are 2-3. Up next is an 11-game road trip through New York, Toronto and Baltimore.
Here are the lineups:
Bundy RHP (8-5, 3.47)
Smyly (6-11, 4.94)
