For starters: Rays at Angels, with Moore on the hill
UPDATE, 7:20: Rays lineup has Delmon Young hitting cleanup as the DH, and lefty-swinging Kelly Johnson in left rather than rigthy Sean Rodriguez. ... OF Sam Fuld had fun pitching on Monday, and talking about it again on Tuesday, but said, "I think once is enough.''
DEVELOPING: The Rays have LHP Matt Moore back on the mound for the first time since late July as they hope to snap a five-game losing streak and 8-of-9 skid.
Moore, who had been on the DL with a sore elbow, will be limited to 90 pitches, and potentially only 5-6 innings as a result, in his first start since July 28. The Rays went 13-18 while he was out, and their starters were 8-13 with a 4.28 ERA. In the 31 games befoer Moore was hurt, the Rays were 24-7 and the starters were 20-6, 2.19.
Offense has been the Rays primary problem in the skid, as they have scored only 7 runs in the last 5 games and 19 over the last nine, while hitting .214, including .172 with runners in scoring position.
The 19 runs are the Rays fewest over a nine-game stretch since Sept. 6-14, 2009.
Things won't necessarily be easier tonight when they face LHP Jason Vargas, who shut them down last week at the Trop. One change is that they have since added righthanded DH Delmon Young and he is expected to be in the lineup tonight.
The Rays officially activated Moore off the DL today and recalled RHP Jeremy Hellickson from the minors so he can start on Wednesday.
