DEVELOPING: The Rays continue to test their own resolve in trying to come back from another disheartening loss tonight when they take on the Mariners at 9:10.

Rookie RHP Chris Archer will be on the mound, making his last start before the Rays start pushing him back to get extra rest and limit his innings. Archer lasted only 3 2/3 innings in his last start but said he doesn't feel tired.

The M's are starting rookie LHP James Paxton, a 24-year-old who was a 2010 fourth-round draft pick out of Kentucky and was 8-11, 4.45 at Tripke-A this year.

The Rays, who start the day 7 1/2 games behind the AL East leading Red Sox and only two ahead of the Orioles and Indians for the second wild-card spot, have been plagued by ineffective offense and a series of mistakes - mental and physical - all around the field.

Lineups when available.
