UPDATE, 4:28: The Rays lost 4-3 to the Pirates. RHP Jake Odorizzi, the No. 3 starter, worked into the fourth, allowing just a home run - albeit a long one - to Andrew McCutchen, on a curveball. ... LHP Blake Snell, their top prospect, had a mixed result outing but showed his ability to work out of trouble with his fastball. ... C Curt Casali left the game after being hit by a pitch on his right shin and was bruised but not expected to miss any time.

UPDATE, 9:04: Steve Pearce said he first felt the tightness in his right calf on Tuesday and knew from previous experience to not push it. He has started running on the treadmill in the pool  and hopes to get back on the field as soon as possible but has no specific timetable yet.

LHP Jonny Venters and RHP Neil Wagner, rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, are slated to throw bullpen sessions today in Port Charlotte.

RHP Jake Odorizzi will be on the mound for the Rays, making his third start of the spring.

The Rays have signed RHP David Carpenter to a minor-league deal. He is a reliever who has pitched with the Astros, Braves, Blue Jays, Yankees and Nationals.
