For starters: Rays at Yankees in Duffy's debut, A-Rod's farewell
UPDATE, 7:31; Rays and Yankees now looking at an 8 p.m. start.
UPDATE, 7:16: Foreboding or not, dark clouds, thunder and rain moved quickly over the stadium as they were prepping for the A-Rod ceremony, which was moved up 10 minutes in an attempt to beat the rain. That didn't work, as the rain forced a scramble and the event to be cut short.
What we did see:
A video highlight package of A-Rod's career
A "Thank You Alex!" message on the scoreboard as "Thanks for the Memories" played over the PA.
A video tribute from Lou Piniella, his first manager
A-Rod waving to the fans and tipping his cap, including to the Rays dugout, where players were standing and applauding.
A-Rod's mom brought on the field by Reggie Jackson
His brother and sister escorted by teammates Didi Gregorius and Starlin Castro
His daughters brought out by "good friend" Mariano Rivera
Yankees ownership then presented him a base signed by his teammates and a framed No. 13 jersey.
And then is rained so hard they all had to scramble off the field.
UPDATE, 6:45: Cash said Duffy would play everyday at SS and probably bat in the middle of the order - fifth tonight, for example, if Kiermaier was playing - and they are excited to see what he can do. .... Duffy said he had a little nervous excitement and was eager to get out, acknowledging the Achilles is still a little sore after games and that it will take him some time to get full comfortable at SS.
UPDATE, 6:32: A-Rod is in the lineup at DH and hitting third, in part because of his homer earlier this season against Archer. Manager Joe Girardi said he would like to give A-rod the "proper sendoff" but insists his priority is winning the game as the Yankees are back in the playoff race. A-Rod said he was "at peace" with today being his last day and did say he is just hoping to do well at the plate. "If I can put it in play a few times and Chris Archer takes it easy on the old man tonight, that'd be cool.''
DEVELOPING: The Rays are, once again, the visitors for a big event at Yankee Stadium, as 3B Alex Rodriguez played what is supposed to be the last game of his career tonight, before being released.
On a lesser scale, it is a big night for the Rays, too, as SS Matt Duffy, acquired last week for LHP Matt Moore, is expected to make his debut, having concluded his rehab from a left Achilles strain on Wednesday at Durham.
RHP Chris Archer, who has allowed only two hits to A-Rod, albeit both homers, in 15 at-bats, will be on the mound for the Rays. Veteran LHP C.C. Sabathia is starting for the Yankees.
A-Rod is expected to be the DH for the Yankees, it is not yet clear how many at-bats he will get. Here is our story from today's Times, looking at his complicated career and personality, with some Rays connections weaved in.
Lineups when available.
