For starters: Rays vs. Angels, seeking two straight
After hanging on to beat the Angels on Monday, the Rays are looking to cobble a winning streak when they take on the Angels again tonight.
The Rays evolving outfield alignment has a different look again, as Steven Souza Jr. is in centerfield tonight, with Nick Franklin in left and Oswaldo Arcia in right.
RHP Jake Odorizzi will be on the mound for the Rays, RHP Tim Lincecum for the Angels.
The big news of the day is closer Alex Colome returns from the DL after missing 16 games with a right biceps strain. To make room, RHP Danny Farquhar was optioned to Durham.
Colome comes straight from the DL. Kevin Cash said Colome’s bullpens were sharp so they didn’t think he needed a minor league rehab outing or two.
As for tonight’s lineup, Souza is in center because Cash wants to give Brandon Guyer a break. Guyer has played every day since returning from the DL last Wednesday and Cash doesn’t want to push it with someone who missed time with a strained hamstring.
Kevin Kiermaier teasingly said he will be coaching Souza from the bench tonight while Souza makes his first-ever start in center.
As Kiermaier spoke with reporters, Souza walked by and yelled, “Center field is mine.”
Of Kiermaier, he is scheduled to hit in the cage tomorrow and will join the Rays this weekend in Boston so he can participate in full pregame batting practice. Kiermaier said he will begin his minor league rehab next week and hopes to rejoin the team when they return from the All-Star Break with a three-game series against the Orioles.
Mike Trout is not in the Angels lineup. Simply a day off.
