For starters: Rays vs. Angels, with Souza back in the lineup
UPDATE, 5:23: Rays Cash said he was impressed with how Souza handled being pulled from the Tuesday game for a lack of hustle and his comments on it, and considered the matter closed. Souza said he hopes it sparks the team to play better in terms of doing the little things. ... RHPs Brad Boxberger (oblique) and Chase Whitley (Tommy John surgery) both did well in their live batting practice sessions, and OF Kevin Kiermaier (left hand fracture) did well in hitting against them. ... Whitley and Boxberger will throws bullpens on Saturday, then live batting practice in Port Charlotte on Tuesday.
DEVELOPING: After being pulled from Tuesday's game due to a lack of hustle, OF Steven Souza Jr. is back in the Rays lineup today, batting sixth and playing rightfield.
Souza ackowledged after the game that he had a lapse in taking a play off in not running hard to first base; manager Kevin Cash said only that it was a matter that would be handled in-house.
The Rays are looking for something to break their extended skid, having lose 17 of their last 20 games, with five remaining until the much-needed All-Star break.
But to do so, they will need better out of LHP Drew Smyly, who starts tonight immersed in a career-worst skid of his own. Struggling RHP Jared Weaver starts for the Angels.
