For starters: Rays vs. Mariners, with Cobb returning
UPDATE, 5:36: The Rays made room for Cobb by designating for assignment INF Ryan Roberts, whom they now have 10 days to trade, release or pass through waivers to outright to the minors. ... Maddon said OF Jason Bourgeois was a better fit in terms of skill set in the short term. ... Maddon said Alex Cobb looked "very normal and ready to go" for his first start back.
Here is the Rays lineup, with an outfield trio of Bourgeois, Fuld and Rodriguez:
DEVELOPING: Having snapped their six-game losing streak in dramatic fashion Wednesday with a 5-4 walkoff win over the Mariners, the Rays are hoping for some carryover tonight.
And they will have RHP Alex Cobb on the mound, making his first start since being hit in the head by a line drive on June 15 at the Trop.
Cobb has made two rehab starts (plus one two-pitch outing due to a blister) and said he has no physical limitations or apprehension about returning. He will be on a pitch limit of about 90, manager Joe Maddon said.
The Mariners are starting veteran lefty Joe Saunders.
The Rays have to make room on both the 25- and 40-man rosters for Cobb. OF Jason Bourgeois and INF Ryan Roberts seem the most likely candidates.
