UPDATE, 1:32: The MRI showed a mild hamstring strain for CF Desmond Jennings, but the Rays remain hopeful he will be out only a few days and Maddon said he definitely expects him to be back before the end of the season. ... As expected, the Rays activated RHP Jesse Crain today, with plans to use him initially in a less-pressurized situation, and only for 20 pitches. ... Maddon said Jeremy Hellickson won't automatically go back into the rotation and that they haven't decided between him and Jake Odorizzi for the Friday start. ... Enny Romero, who made the big spot start on Sunday in his debut, will stick around and could be used in relief later this week. ... Maddon said it was "not that big of a reach" and he expects Beckham to play well.

UPDATE, 1:20: With Desmond Jennings sidelined with a mild hamstring strain, the Rays will field one of their most unusual lineups today, featuring just-called-up Tim Beckham making his first major-league start, and at 2B, as he wanted to add another right-handed bat.

Rays lineup:

DEVELOPING: The Rays play their last home game of the regular season today at Tropicana Field, taking on the Orioles at 3:10.

The Rays start the day leading the American League wild-card race, one-half game of the Indians, who are off today, and two games ahead of the Rangers, who play home vs. Houston.

The Rays leave after the game today for a six-game trip to New York and Toronto. If they end up winning the AL wild-card they will host the one-game playoff on Wednesday Oct. 2. If they win the second wild-card they would play on the road that day.

The Rays will send rookie RHP Chris Archer to the mound this afternoon against Orioles LHP Wei-Yin Chen.

One big question for the Rays today is the status of CF Desmond Jennings, who left Sunday's game in the sixth inning with tightness in his hamstring. He was to go for a precautionary MRI, but the Rays haven't said yet how it went.

Also, the Rays are expected to activate RHP Jesse Crain today for his first appearance. He has been recovering from a shoulder strain since being acquired July 29.
