For starters, Rays vs. Padres
Update 5:10 p.m. Manager Joe Maddon said CF Desmond Jennings has a minor groin issue, which is why he's not starting tonight, and he may not start tommorrow, either. But Maddon said it's not "awful" or "serious," and could be available off the bench.
*C Jose Molina (bruised right knee) said he feels better, and Maddon believes he'll be able to play.
*With the interleague series against the Padres, having not seen them in spring training, Maddon said they'll have to rely mostly on info and stats from "upstairs" for scouting reports. There is one familiar face, with ex-Ray RHP Dale Thayer, in the Padres bullpen.
*Maddon said he sent good friend, Padres manager Bud Black, a nice bottle of wine, telling him not to open it until the 2013 "Pads-Rays World Series."
Developing: Having salvaged a four-game split with the Jays - thanks to Thursday's 5-4 walk-off walk by Luke Scott - the Rays will open a weekend interleague series with the Padres tonight at Tropicana Field.
The Rays (16-18) will face a San Diego (16-18) team that has won four straight, and seven of its last 10.
RHP Alex Cobb, who has been impressive so far this season, will start on the mound, having fared well against National League teams (4-1 with a 3.21 ERA). The Padres will star ex-Reds All-Star Edinson Volquez.
Before today's game, the Rays made a roster move, putting RHP Brandon Gomes on the 15-day disabled list with a right lat strain, and called up RHP Josh Lueke from Triple-A Durham. Lueke has pitched well for the Bulls, including throwing two scoreless innings last night (and 29 pitches).
One thing to watch today is C Jose Molina, who suffered a bruised right knee in Thursday's game.
