23

February

UPDATE, 1:05: The Rays got their 2013 exhibition season underway with Roberto Hernandez's firts pitch, and then a groundout by Starling Marte. For in-game updates, check our @TBTimes_Rays Twitter feed, also available on the tampabay.com Rays club.

Maddon said he enjoyed a visit Friday night to the Tampa home of Eddie DeBartolo Jr. for a charity event, and managed to hold his own around the sushi table despite the presence of radio host Ian Beckles.

UPDATE, 10:29: Maddon said he will talk to Pirates manager Clint Hurdle and the umpires, and have bench coach Dave Martinez do the same in Fort Myers, about the possibility of having players re-enter the game since they are a bit shorthanded with the split squads. ... With the exception of Evan Longoria, who returned to camp this morning, all Rays position players will be available for action today but OF Brandon Guyer, who has some leg soreness. ... RHP Kyle Farnsworth will throw a bullpen session today, he was held out of batting practice on Wednesday due to some "abnormal soreness.'' ... Several minor-leaguers who are not in camp but working out informally will be in uniform for reserve duty, including a few Maddon has never met, such as C Luke Maile and OF Taylor Motter.

Pirates lineup:

Marte lf
Presley cf
Snider rf
Jones 1b
Alvarez 3b
Hawpe dh
McKenry c
Harrison 2b
D'Arnaud ss
Locke p

DEVELOPING: The Rays today have what manager Joe Maddon candidly called a "bad draw,'' having to field teams to play two games to open the exhibition season in a spring that started earlier, and runs longer, due to the World Baseball Classic.

In reality, that meant bringing extra minor-leaguers to camp and means having to be extra cautious to not over-extend any players this earlier.

The Rays say there are "plenty of seats" available for the home opener, which will feature the Rays debut of top prospect OF Wil Myers, who was acquired in trade from Kansas City and will start today in rightfield.

Here are the lineups that were posted on Friday:
