For starters: Steven Souza Jr., not in lineup, Dana Eveland DFA'd
ST. PETERSBURG - RF Steven Souza Jr., said he's still "a little sore today" after leaving Tuesday's win against the Mariners with a sore left hip suffered when he tried to get to his feet after diving for a ball.
Souza is not in the lineup and we'll learn more Thursday if the injury is healing or if he will need to go on the disabled list.
As insurance, the Rays selected outfielder Jaff Decker from Durham to give the Rays a full bench tonight.
To make room, they designated struggling LHP Dana Eveland for assignment.
Also, LHP Blake Snell arrived this afternoon. He will be activated before Thursday's start against the Mariners. Snell, who made his MLB debut in April at Yankee Stadium, said he already has some jitters about facing his childhood team. The Seattle native grew up attending Mariners games with his dad. Favorite player? Come on. Ken Griffey Jr.
As for tonight's game, the Rays look to continue their winning ways behind a well-rested LHP Drew Smyly, who makes his first start in 10 days.
On the mound for the M's is RHP Nathan Karns, who was voted the Rays rookie of the year last season by the Tampa Bay chapter of the BBWAA.
Here are the lineups:
Karns RHP (5-2, 4.09)
Smyly LHP (2-7, 4.94)
