Former Rays C Rene Rivera signs minor-league deal with Mets
Former Rays C Rene Rivera has signed a minor-league deal with the Mets, agent Melvin Roman confirmed to the Tampa Bay Times.
Rivera was released last week, with the Rays paying him one-fourth of his $1.7-million salary as termination pay.
Rivera will initially join the Mets Triple-A team, but could be called up if they decide to give current backup Kevin Plawecki regular at-bats in Triple-A. Travis d'Arnaud is the starter, and would be complemented by Rivera's strong defensive skills.
