DEVELOPING: Rays 2B Nick Franklin was forced to leave Wednesday's game shortly after being hit on the helmet by a Kevin Kiermaier swing in the on-deck circle.
Franklin was getting set to lead off the game when Kiermaier, who was loosening to bat second, swung the bat over his head and struck Franklin.
After being checked by head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield, Franklin stayed in the game and drew a leadoff walk, then scored on Brad Miller's two-out homer.
But Franklin apparently had further issues as did not go back our to take his position on the field.
Already without starting SS Matt Duffy (Achilles) and 2B Logan Forsythe (back), the Rays were froced to scramble. C Luke Maile came into the game to play 1B, with Brad Miller moving back to SS and Tim Beckham from SS to 2B.
That left the Rays with just one healthy player on the bench, OF Corey Dickerson.
