Fuld out another 4-5 days
OF Sam Fuld, already sidelined nearly two weeks with right hamstring tightness, won't be ready to return to games for another 4-5 days, manager Joe Maddon said.
Howvever Maddon said that should not imapct Fuld's availability to be on the roster for the April 2 opener, though it will require a heavy workload over the final 10 days of spring training to get him enough at-bats to be ready.
"It's getting better, everything is coming along well, but (head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield) still wants to be cautious with it,'' Maddon said. "There's not a heavy level of concern right now.''
Maddon said he was not ready to start looking at other options for the reserve outfield spot. Brandon Guyer, who is on the 40-man roster, would seem the best fit as an outfielder who can play all three spots, though the Rays could also consider more utility type guys such as Stephen Vogt or Chris Gimenez if he doesn't win the backup catcher job.
"Everything Ronnie's telling me I believe everything is going to be fine,'' Maddon said. "The big thing would just to get Sam the appropriate number of at-bats for him to get ready. I think his leg's going to be fine by that point, but you want to make sure that he's ready too.''
Maddon said if Fuld was back by the 20th or so he could get 25 plate appearances by April 2.
