J.D. Martin called up also, will be in bullpen

Saturday, it seemed the Rays made a choice in picked LHP Enny Romero to start today over RHP J.D. Martin.

But Sunday, they called up Martin as well, adding him to the 40- and 25-man rosters and saying he will be available in relief today.

That would indicate two things:

One, that they didn't feel comfortable with the bullpen potentially covering a lot of innings today if Romero falters, having used 11 pitchers on Friday and with Chris Archer starting Monday.

And two, that Jesse Crain is not yet ready to added to the roster. Or that they decided Martin, who was a starter at Triple-A, would be of more value today than Crain, who needs a soft landing for his first appearance of the season.

Martin led all minor-leaguers with 16 wins at Durham, had a 2.75 ERA and was named Most Valuable Pitcher in the International League.
