Live from Port Charlotte: Prospects early today, 'no updates' on Souza
UPDATE, 12:39: OF Kevin Kiermaier and 3B Evan Longoria reported to camp late this morning, Kiermaier talking confidently about continuing his high level of play this season and sharing what will be heart-breaking news to some, that he has a steady girlfriend.
Manager Kevin Cash was pleased with the overall working, mentioning specifically how good Matt Moore looked in his bullpen session.
Cash said there were no updates on Souza's status.
DEVELOPING: The Rays are getting ready for the second day of pitcher and catcher workouts today, and prospects RHP Jacob Faria and LHP Blake Snell got an early start.
After being called out by All-Star ace Chris Archer on Sunday for strolling in around 8:30 - still early for the 9 a.m. meeting that opened the camp - Faria and Snell were in the building by 7 on Monday.
"We were here bright and early,'' Faria said. "Didn't want to risk it.''
Among other early notes:
* OF Steven Souza Jr. said there were "no updates" on the status of his left intercostal strain, with no specific plans yet to see a specialist or have an MRI. "It's maybe a little better if anything,'' he said.
* Non-roster OF Dayron Varona, the only Cuban player on the Rays roster, reported to camp. The first full-squad workout isn't until Friday, but 60 of the 64 players have already reported. The final four are 3B Evan Longoria, OF Kevin Kiermaier, OF Desmond Jennings and non-roster INF Juniel Querecuto.
* Among the pitchers slated to throw bullpen sessions today are Matt Moore, Jake Odorizzi and closer Brad Boxberger.
