Marc Topkin is not convinced the Rays will trade pitcher Chris Archer.

It's the most wonderful time of the year - if you like rumors, speculation, jumped-to conclusions and, undoubtedly, some outright fabrications about your baseball team and favorite players. That being said, we'll filter as best we can and present some of the chatter we're hearing in the hallways, media room and, of course, the late-night lobby during this week's winter meetings. Though there are high expectations for lots of action, be warned that the running joke has been that since the meetings are being held just outside Washington, D.C. that nothing likely will get done here:

* Though the Rays have definite interest in free-agent C Welington Castillo after his unexpected non-tender by Arizona, we're hearing from someone in the know that they "wouldn't expect" that deal to happen, as of now anyway. Several other teams are interested, which isn't good for the Rays, who usually don't win bidding wars in terms of money or years. ...

* We're not convinced the Rays are even going to trade RHP Chris Archer, especially the more chatter we hear about how high a price they have on him. For example, according to someone with one of the interested teams, the Rays are asking for 5-6 players. Obviously it's more important who the players are, but that sounds like the framework of the deal that landed the Rays Archer as he was one of the five players the Rays got from the Cubs in the package deal for RHP Matt Garza. ...

* ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick is among the national writers predicting the Rays will trade Archer this week, and he says to the Cubs. ...

* While Archer seems to be the most popular name with the Braves, who have a deep log of prospects, and the Cubs, who have a surplus of big-leaguers with Jorge Soler and even, potentially, Javy Baez, there are other teams with the sights set elsewhere, such as the Pirates eyeing RHP Jake Odorizzi. ...

* The Astros, seeking some pitching after their other lineup upgrades, are looking at several of the Rays pitchers. ...

* Among relievers the Rays have interest in are LHP Dario Alvarez, who was last with Texas. ...

* Not Rays, but the Phillies spring stadium in Clearwater will soon be renamed from Bright House Field to Spectrum after the corporate change. ...

* Steve Pearce won't be returning to the Rays, agreeing Monday to a two-year, $12.5-million deal with the AL East rival Blue Jays.
