Morning-after look at the non-tender deadline

Having the non-tender deadline in early December forced the Rays to make some difficult choices, and the result was a decision to part ways with two players, popular OF Sam Fuld and LHP Wesley Wright.
Executive VP Andrew Friedman said they would have interest in re-signing both, but at this point in the off-season it was difficult to make decisions on complementary type players without knowing how the rest of their roster will come together over the next few months.

For example, in talking to Fuld, Friedman said that until he knows whether they will have a right- or left-handed hitting first baseman, he can't decide whether he needs more right- or left-handed hitters on their bench.
As of now, the Rays have 36 players on their 40-man roster (with reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo to be added), including six outfielders (David DeJesus, Brandon Guyer, Desmond Jennings, Matt Joyce, Kevin Kiermaier, Wil Myers), plus two others who can play the outfield, Sean Rodriguez and Ben Zobrist. As for Wright's role, they have three other lefties for the bullpen: Jake McGee, Alex Torres, Cesar Ramos.
But the non-tender deadline can also be a good thing for the Rays as there are now 41 additional free agents, and relatively low-priced ones at that, that they can look over and potentially pursue.
"There's been some fairly interesting guys,'' Friedman said late Monday. "This is a list we look forward to seeing every year, and we've had some success shopping off this list. We'll meet tomorrow and really go though it and figure out if there's any guys that are out there that fit well for us to potentially try to line up on something sooner rather than later.''
Among the 41 others are two players with Tampa Bay area ties cut loose by the Marlins: OF Chris Coghlan (East Lake HS) and RHP Ryan Webb (CCC). Both could be potential fits with the Rays, Coghlan, a former NL rookie of the year, for his versatility, Webb for his recent success and solid groundball rate.
The Rays primary needs are for a first baseman, a couple relievers, and a bench player or two, though Friedman said they, as always, are looking to upgrade at any position. (And if they are planning to trade David Price, they may need another starter.)
There are two first baseman on the list, Garret Jones (most recently with the Pirates), and Mat Gamel (Cubs). Among relievers is former Brewers closer John Axford, who was nontendered by St. Louis, and Andrew Bailey, by the Red Sox.
