Oviedo option declined
The Rays decided late Monday to decline a $2-million option on reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo and instead pay a $30,000 buyout and allow him to become a free agent,
Oviedo was a successful closer for the Marlins while known as Leo Nunez, but missed all of 2013 recovering from Tommy John elbow surgery. He spent much of the season rehabbing and at one point seemed on track to pitch in September, but had a setback and didn't get that far. He did throw during the September instructional league in Port Charlotte.
Oviedo joins nine others as Rays free agents who, as of midnight, are eligible to sign with any team.
The others set free are:
Pitchers: Jesse Crain, Roberto Hernandez, Oviedo, Fernando Rodney, Jamey Wright.
Catcher: Jose Molina
Infielders: Kelly Johnson, James Loney.
DHs: Luke Scott, Delmon Young
