Peralta makes WBC withdrawal official
Rays reliever Joel Peralta said this morning he is definitely not playing in the upcoming World Baseball Classic for his native Domincian Republic.
The decision was the product of two isses, He was already reconsidering due to concern by the Rays about his workload going into what they hope will be a long season, then being sidelined and unable to throw during the first four days of camp due to a stiff neck.
“That was the big part of it,” Peralta said. “If I was practicing and pitching and being ready I might change my mind, talk to (Rays executive VP) Andrew (Friedman) and see if he’d let me go. They were really concerned about it. They really asked me not to go, so they played a big part of this, too. I’m a Rays pitcher. I work for them.''
Peralta, who turns 37 next month, said he is disappointed because this was his only chance to represent his country. "It hurts a little bit,'' he said.
