Ramos makes it five for No. 5 spot
The Rays now have a five-way battle for the open No. 5 spot in their rotation.
LHP Cesar Ramos, who seemed slotted to be the long man in the bullpen, is now among the candidates to take the fifth spot, opened by Jeremy Hellickson's elbow surgery.
Ramos joined non-roster veteran LH Erik Bedard and RHs Jake Odorizzi, Nathan Karns and Alex Colome.
Ramos was a starter earlier in his career and in the minors, and the Rays talked to him during the off-season and again at the start of camp about competing for the open spot.
"We think that he's capable of pitching five plus innings with all the different weapons he has, and he's able to get out a righty too,'' manager Joe Maddon said.
