Rays add Duncan, DFA Vogt + Chirinos
UPDATE, 4:14: Executive VP Andrew Friedman said they considered other players but chose Duncan for a reason. "Extra base-hit ability,'' he said. "We feel like Shelley has a chance to hit the ball out of the ballpark and add value with his power.'' ... The decisions on Vogt and Chirinos were difficult he said, but with Gimenez next in line behind the plate it was something they felt they could do in an effort to put the best team on the field now, without knowing how long Scott will be out.
DEVELOPING: The Rays have called up 1B/OF/DH Shelley Duncan and set their opening day roster.
Doing so required creating two spots on the 40-man roster, and C Robinson Chirinos and 1B/C/OF Stephen Vogt were designated for assignment.
Duncan will take the place of injured DH Luke Scott and is likely to be in the lineup against all left-handed pitchers. Scott was placed on the 15-day DL thought he could be out up to five weeks.
Veteran RHP Jamey Wright was added to the roster as well,
The Rays also added RHP Juan Carlos Oviedo to the 40-man roster, then immediately moved him to the 60-day DL, He is expected to be out until September.
Duncan hit .224 during the spring, but lead the team with five home runs, and the power potential from the right side is the biggest draw. The Rays also considered OF Brandon Guyer for the final spot.
