The Rays hung on to beat the Pirates 4-2 on Thursday and improved to 9-4 on the spring.

RHP Alex Cobb gave the Rays another strong start, allowing only one hit, walking none and striking out five. Cobb was pleased with his performance, said all of his pitches were working and that for the the first time he mixed in a cutter.

RHP Chris Archer overcame what he called a 6-8 pitch lapse to post three solind innings, and Jake Odorizzi finished.

Manager Joe Maddon was just as pleased with the hitters, mentioning Mike Fontenot among others, as the pitching.

The Rays are home in Port Charlotte on Friday against the Phillies with David Price on the mound.
