Rays continue talks but still no action at winter meetings
The Rays continued talks on the last full day of baseball's winter meetings but gave no indication they were close to any deals.
"It's been a busy couple days, so busy I'm not sure what day it is or even what year it is at some points late in the night,' baseball operations president Matt Silverman.
Conversations will continue tonight, with Silverman scheduled to leave Nashville on Thursday morning.
* Former Rays All-Star Ben Zobrist was formally introduced as a member of the Cubs, reuniting with manager Joe Maddon, and the said the chance to stay in the midwest and help bring a championship to Chicago were key reasons for his decision.
* The Mets turned to 2B Neil Walker, acquiring him in trade from Pittsburgh for P Jon Niese.
* The Yankees traded R Justin Wilson to the Tigers for prospects.
With the Rays feeling they don't have any glaring needs, most of the their talks have been aimed at adding an impact player (and thus making a signfiicant change in the roster) or adding to their depth.
Their most advanced talks appear to have involved Cubs INF Javier Baez, a young power-hitter who is now less likely to be available after Chicago traded INF Starlin Castro after signing free agent Ben Zobrist, the ex-Rays All-Star.
"There are so many different possibilities out there,'' Silverman said, "but nothing has come to fruition yet and we might walk away from these meetings and the follow-up conversations with nothing, but we'll feel better about doing nothing having gone through all these conversations and pursuing different avenues.''
